In United States developmental disabilities are best described as life-long disabilities that can be either physical or mental impairments or even disabilities that usually develop in a person prior to the completion of teen age. All those disabilities that prove to be a hindrance to the normal day to day activities of an individual are grouped under this. The ARC is an organization that has branches in many cities and towns. ARC once stood for the Association of Retarded Citizens, but is now known simply as ARC. The ARC provides social and community activities for the developmentally disabled and trains their members to advocate for themselves with local, state and federal government bodies.
Different types of disabilities are treated differently. For example autism is treated with social, occupational and behavioral therapies to control some behaviors while Asperger syndrome finds better response with Chiropractic treatment. Again research continues on to develop better treatment modalities to check on disabilities. Neuro-cognitive therapy is the most modern approach to improve conditions of develop-mental disabilities.Mental retardation is by far the most common of developmental disabilities. Typically manifesting itself before the individual reaches the age of 18, this condition is defined by the American Association of Mental Retardation as a significant limitation in both intellectual functioning and adaptive behavior (i). Redefinition of the condition in 2002 paints a positive picture, placing heavy emphasis on the ability for the individual to become more functional and adaptive when provided with carefully constructed individual supports.
Many children with problems are receiving extra help through tutoring or have been placed in special education classes, as well as, being placed on medication. Often, these remedies are not producing the permanent results that parents and teachers had expected. Time is enemy for these children who are struggling and discouraged. Each day millions of parents are told their child has a learning disability. That is why parents, caregivers and teachers working with children with developmental disabilities focus much on working to increase a child's physical balance, developing physical strength and proper coordination prior to developing their social, mental and emotional faculties. The proper development of the latter depends much on how well balance, strength and coordination improve during regular therapy.
