Neck Muscle Spasms

If your neck feels tense or painful, your neck muscles may be locked up in a spasm. A neck muscle spasm occurs when the cervical muscles are overstimulated. Essentially, they won't turn off.Exercise is natural therapy. Many of my clients with neck problems ask me to recommend stretches to relieve their tension. However, strength-training the right muscle groups is often more effective than stretches.Carpal tunnel exercises for stretching and tension relief are always a good idea. But bear in mind that this condition could be neck muscle spasm related. The myofascia - the tissue that wraps our muscles from head to toe, can retain tension - a kind of stickiness - so instead of sliding easily as our body parts move, retains tension and sticks. So, some carpal tunnel pain can originate in our neck.



Muscle spasms and torn ligaments are the causes of most neck cricks which feel like eye-popping pain in the neck and shoulder area. You can self-diagnose the cause of your neck pain; if gentle stretching provides some pain relief then it is a muscle spasm. If stretching makes the pain sharper the problem is ligament damage; if this is the case, stop stretching.Your neck and upper-back muscles will feel more relaxed. They may stop their spasms. You can practice these throughout your daily routine, for a few seconds or a few minutes. The more you practice these alignment techniques, the more relief you will feel.Sacrum holds- Your neck and sacrum (tailbone) are connected by a long band of connective tissue. It is not uncommon to have tension in both places simultaneously. Therefore, an application from cranial-sacral therapy may be used to relieve tension.



You can rub an ice cube over the sore region using a slow, circular motion. It takes a few minutes to numb the pain. Once the area numbs and relaxes due to the cold, fresh blood rushes to the area, which helps unclench the muscle fibers. Just be sure to keep the ice moving, and use a gentle massaging motion. Of course, this works best when you have help, since you can relax completely and not concern yourself with extending your arm to reach the back or neck area.Depending on the muscle group, these spasms have varying degrees of severity. For example, a leg cramp or neck cramp caused by overexertion or poor posture is certainly different from a heart attack, but they are essentially the same response. In both cases, an overstressed muscle reacts to excessive stress with inflammation, contraction, and pain. They all, however, have similar characteristics.Poor nutrition, magnesium and calcium deficiencies can be treated by diet alteration or supplements. Calcium deficiencies can be overcome by eating milk products such a yogurt or cheese or other calcium rich foods such as salmon, beans, almonds and spinach. Magnesium enriched foods include nuts, seeds, soy milk and whole grain used in cereals and breads.
